How does sedation dentistry work?
With conscious sedation, the patient is awake, not put to sleep. This is an option for patients, when anesthesia is not enough to diminish their fears or nervousness. We provide an oral sedative that will put them at ease during their dental treatment. Conscious sedation is an excellent option to reduce your anxiety, and allow Neil E. Bergstrom, D.D.S. to get more work accomplished in a single visit.
Conscious sedation puts you at ease, and in a state of relaxation while also allowing you to stay awake and alert during the procedure. You will be able to ignore the discomfort while being able to maintain a line of communication with Neil E. Bergstrom, D.D.S.. Communication with our team is an important step in the dentist and patient relationship, we find it vital to your health to be able to discuss what we see, and how problems can be prevented.
We offer two main options for conscious sedation.
Inhalation includes nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas. This is a very light form of sedation. Neil E. Bergstrom, D.D.S. administers nitrous oxide and oxygen through a mask that is placed over your nose, and is worn throughout the procedure. Laughing gas is known for placing patients in a calm, euphoric state, helping them ignore the dental treatment and can even give them the giggles as the name implies. Patients love this option because it effective during treatment and when the mask is removed, the nitrous oxide wears off almost immediately.
We offer prescribed sedatives, or anti-anxiety medication, that you ingest orally about one hour before your appointment. This option provides a light to moderate effect depending on the amount given and your needs. It will not put you to sleep, but will help you feel at ease and sometimes patients do fall asleep. Recovery from oral sedation may take several hours, so we do not allow patients to drive themselves home following treatment. They will need to bring an escort. Oral sedation is beneficial to the patient by easing their worries and also allows us to get more dental work done in one appointment.
